It has been a true delight to see Matt Damon and Ben Affleck collaborating on screen during the past five years. Both of them delivered outstanding performances inRidley Scott’s greatly overlooked “The Last Duel,” and utterly delightful in the Nike shoe controversy “Air”(which Affleck also directed). Now, they have come together again for “The Rip,” an action thriller written and directed by Joe Carnahan.

Damon and Affleck play, respectively, Miami police Lieutenant Dane Dumars and Detective Sergeant JD Byrne, both part of a Tactical Narcotics Team who get a tip about money hidden in a local safe house. Upon searching the place, they discover $20 million in drug cash. Dumars decides not to inform his superiors and takes the team’s phones, causing Byrne to question whether Dumars intends to steal the obviously life-altering amount of money.

Carnahan has directed several outstanding films focusing on police corruption (especially 2002’s “Narc”), which shows his deep understanding of this murky world. This time, though, he was working on a story rooted in actual events that the film’s technical consultant, Chris Casiano, experienced firsthand.

In an interview with /Film’s Ben Pearson, Carnahan explained how Casiano was able to add “a significant amount of color” concerning the actual real-life heist. One intriguing aspect is that it took 42 hours to count the money. Other details that might have appeared too outlandish to be true also occurred. According to Carnahan:

There’s an actual DEA-held Wells Fargo, it’s a real location, and there was a man with a clipboard waiting for them, along with six armed individuals, and they sent the other two officers away in Ubers? That’s all accurate. Then they used a two-story counter, a large electronic one. So, that moment when the display shows $20 million, and the card says the same number? That really took place.

Joe Carnahan had to ‘create’ the rest of The Rip beyond the known facts

Clearly, Joe Carnahan had to deviate from the actual events to heighten the movie’s tension, but a surprisingly large part of what is shown in “The Rip” actually happened. It’s challenging to discover more information about the real incident online, but there were indeed arrests at the conclusion of the investigation. However, the overall framework of “The Rip” is entirely the result of Carnahan’s creative mind. “[I]t’s like, then you have to come up with the rest, man,” the director mentioned. “You have to create all the small details, and the Rube Goldberg-like machine that ultimately drops a net over the mouse. But we had a bit more understanding of it than someone who’s just reading about it.”

“The Rip” is now available to stream on Netflix. If you’re looking to read a remarkable screenplay by Carnahan, seek out his adaptation of James Ellroy’s “White Jazz.” It is written in the first person and is truly outstanding.
