Social Worker Danner was working in her office in Atlanta at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention back in February when an adoption agency representative brought some positive news. However, even amidst this joyous moment, she was aware that the Trump administration planned to cut down federal government positions. This realization left her concerned about her own job security.

There is only one obstacle that will confront Trump—and he is well aware of it.

She ceased being concerned only shortly after hanging up with the caseworker since both she and her colleagues discovered that DOGE intended to terminate thousands of probationary employees similar to herself due to extensive cutbacks throughout the federal administration. Although Danner had been employed by the CDC for many years, working alongside community groups to secure funding aimed at combating drug misuse, she had recently switched divisions, putting her back into “probationary” standing according to CDC guidelines. This recent shift made her particularly vulnerable to becoming one of DOGE’s targets.

Danner mentions that she has always wished to provide a home for a child in need long-term, however, her limited savings and single status make this challenging. Therefore, she contacted the case worker again to express that she could not bring the child into what was currently an uncertain environment.

“I felt a great deal of guilt about my inability to welcome that young girl into my home,” Danner said to AJC reporters.
