Filmmaker Karan Johar, in a recent discussion, provided details about his initial experience directing Salman Khan while working onKuch Kuch Hota Hai,a movie that still maintains a strong fan base almost 28 years since its debut. The director shared a look at the behind-the-scenes environment that played a role in making one of the most admired films in Hindi cinema.
Johar talked about the difficulties he encountered while working with Salman Khan, who was already a well-known actor. He shared his nervousness about meeting expectations on set, especially during his first meetings with Khan. The director said, “why he ‘ended up crying.'” This instance illustrates the stress involved in directing famous actors, particularly during a director’s first project.
Thinking back to their initial meeting on set, Johar talked about the tension and doubt he experienced. As Johar stated, “It was my first time working with Salman Khan, and I was… how should I put it? Totally nervous because he was such a big star. On his first day on set, I entered his van. He was wearing a T-shirt and jeans. I said, ‘Salman, you know this is a big set.’ And he responded, ‘Yes, but if a groom arrives in jeans and a T-shirt for the first time, it will be a new trend. I’ll bring the style.'”
Johar went on to describe the emotional effect of the situation, saying, “I was really excited but also very anxious, thinking, ‘What if he walks in wearing jeans and a T-shirt?’ I ended up breaking down in tears right there in his van.” The conversation highlighted the significance of the moment and the director’s dedication to getting the perfect scene just right.
The outcome of this situation occurred when Salman Khan addressed Johar’s evident emotional state. As Johar recalled, “Salman appeared uneasy upon seeing me cry and eventually said, ‘No, no, I’ll wear the suit.’ That’s how we filmed my very first Sangeet song sequence,” concluded Karan Johar. This choice preserved the desired visual style of the scene and alleviated the director’s worries.
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai still stands out for its unforgettable moments, featuring scenes with Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji, as well as a brief appearance by Salman Khan. The movie’s music and famous pairings have made it a classic in Indian cinema, frequently played at gatherings and festivities.
