After eight weekends, Disney’s “Zootopia 2has broken the record for the top-earning animated film produced by a Hollywood studio, earning $1.7 billion worldwide, surpassing Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” to rank second on the all-time animation list, behind the Chinese film “Ne Zha 2” when adjusted for inflation.
In an internal studio conflict, “Zootopia 2” is also expected to conclude as Hollywood’s top-grossing film of 2025, surpassing another Disney release, “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” which could drop below the successful animated movie on the charts next week. During the MLK weekend, “Fire and Ash” is anticipated to generate a four-day fifth weekend total of approximately $17 million, while “Zootopia 2” has earned $12 million in its eighth weekend.
On the local front, “Zootopia 2” has surpassed $400 million and is expected to reach $423 million with continued strong performance over the next 2-3 weeks. In doing so, it will surpass “A Minecraft Movie” and the “Lilo & Stitch” remake to claim the number one domestic position among 2025 releases.
Prior to adjusting for inflation, Disney has unveiled the top three highest earning Hollywood animated films ever, and the top four if the CGI version of “The Lion King” ($1.66 billion) is considered an animated movie. Included in this group is “Frozen II,” which earned $1.45 billion, while the most successful non-Disney Hollywood animated film is Illumination’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” with $1.36 billion.
What’s intriguing about this sequel’s performance is that within the country, “Zootopia 2” is still expected to earn roughly $200 million less than “Inside Out 2,” which generatedjust under $653 millionin the summer of 2024. However, this was compensated for by the Disney sequel’shistoric run in China, where it is nearing the point of surpassing “Avengers: Endgame” as the nation’s top-grossing American movie with $619 million.
However, this popularity has also reached other major Asian markets, especially Japan, where the film is ranked among the top 5 highest earning releases of 2025 for the year, alongside titles like “Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle” and “Kokuho.” It is expected to generate $100 million in Japan, with $83 million already recorded. In comparison, “Avatar: Fire and Ash” has only earned $13 million and rising in Japan, which is less than half of the $32.9 million made by its 2022 predecessor, “The Way of Water.”
In this run, “Zootopia 2” has entered the top 10 highest earning movies ever, without considering inflation, placing at No. 9, just behind “Spider-Man: No Way Home” which earned $1.92 billion.
“This significant achievement is primarily due to the fans across the globe whose excitement made it possible. We are extremely proud of our directors Jared Bush, Byron Howard, and Yvett Merino, along with the entire team at Walt Disney Animation Studios, for producing a film that resonates so profoundly with viewers worldwide. ‘Zootopia 2’ represents an outstanding accomplishment, and we appreciate everyone who contributed to its realization,” said Alan Bergman, Co-Chairman, Disney Entertainment.
