A Legacy of Friendship and Collaboration
Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman shared a deep bond that spanned decades, with their friendship evident in the many projects they worked on together. From the iconic “Harry Potter” series to the beloved film “Love, Actually,” their partnership left an indelible mark on cinema.
The Making of Sense and Sensibility
In a recent video for GQ, Emma Thompson reflected on her 1995 film Sense and Sensibility, which recently celebrated its 30th anniversary. The film, an adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel, features Thompson as Elinor Dashwood, a composed young woman who takes charge of her family after her father’s passing. Hugh Grant played Edward Ferrars, Elinor’s love interest, while Kate Winslet portrayed Marianne, Elinor’s younger sister. Alan Rickman played Colonel Brandon, a kind-hearted character who becomes enamored with Marianne.
Thompson described the film as a “very happy” experience, noting that the cast was incredibly fortunate. She praised Winslet, who was then just 19, calling her “untried” but full of promise. “She was heaven on earth and still is, you know, just completely normal person,” Thompson said.

A Special Connection with Hugh Grant
Thompson also shared her thoughts on Hugh Grant, with whom she has collaborated extensively. She recalled teasing him during filming, saying, “I kept on saying, ‘God, Hugh, you’re so grumpy. You’ve got the energy of a welk.’ And he would respond quite well to that.” She noted that it was beneficial for Grant to take on such a role at that stage in his career, especially after his breakout in Four Weddings and a Funeral.
Alan Rickman: A Heroic Turn
One of the most significant aspects of Sense and Sensibility for Thompson was Rickman’s portrayal of Colonel Brandon. She highlighted how thrilled Rickman was to play a “heroic” character, something he hadn’t done much before. “He was so happy to be playing someone heroic and nice ‘cause he’d been fed up with wanting him to be the Sheriff of Nottingham,” she said.
Rickman had previously played the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) and was famously known for his role as Hans Gruber in Die Hard (1988). His work in Sense and Sensibility allowed audiences to see a different side of the actor, one that was kind and compassionate.

A Collaborative Spirit
Thompson also spoke about the collaborative atmosphere on set, particularly with director Ang Lee, who was making his English-language debut with Sense and Sensibility. She described Lee as “extraordinary,” recalling a moment when she and Grant asked to reshoot a scene. “He reacted very well and quietly,” she remembered. Later, she discovered that Lee had explained to them that in Taiwan, “The director is God” and that actors are just “pieces.” However, Lee appreciated the collaboration and found it refreshing.
A Lasting Impact
Thompson’s performance in Sense and Sensibility earned her an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, making her the first and only person to win Oscars for both acting and writing. Both she and Winslet were also nominated for their performances in the film.
A new adaptation of Sense and Sensibility is currently in development by Netflix, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones. This upcoming version promises to bring Austen’s timeless story to a new generation of fans.
