Outline:
You’re probably aware of the saying — you don’t realize what you have until it’s lost. Recently, a redditor u/Keiko91asked, “What was a thing from the 90s that you thought was ‘uncool’ at the time… but now really miss?”
Here are 21 of the best responses:
.Calling a friend and having a brief chat with the family member who answered the phone before shouting for my friend to come get it.

.Not owning a mobile phone. I was extremely excited to get my first phone in the late ’90s. No more needing to use public pay phones! But when I think back… the freedom we had without phones was incredible. I miss being able to be somewhere and having no one know where I was, completely disconnected, and that not being a problem.

.Viewing a series I enjoy, taking the week to reflect on it, and ensuring I was free to watch the following episode.

.I long for the shared bond we had with few watching choices. My friends and I all loved this movie calledAirborne. It wasn’t a remarkable movie, but for several months, it was the film that aired on HBO a few times each day, typically around 3 (after school) and again around 7 (before bedtime). Therefore, even though none of us had any particular agreement or enthusiasm to view it, we all ended up going home and watching it. And we all watched it again the following day… and the day after… and the day after… and soon, we all began to enjoy it because it was something we all watched approximately ten times.

.“When Star Trek: Next Generationarrived, and my stepfather and I genuinely connected, with all the other nonsense being set aside.

.Touch-based elements, such as buttons, dials, and switches found on televisions, stereos, cameras, and other devices.

.I long for commercials. (TRULY NEVER IMAGINED I WOULD LIVE TO SEE THIS.) I’m not referring to ads. I mean commercials. I miss the quirky character in those annoying things. Absurd jingles, appealing tunes, rhymes that didn’t make much sense, ones you end up whistling for hours afterwards.

.The delightful hum of indoor shopping malls during the festive season.

.I used to believe that waiting for everything was “uncool,” but I now long for that more relaxed rhythm. People’s tolerance is fading quickly as they receive everything right away. I now appreciate standing in line at the checkout, not checking my phone, and making the most of that idle time.

.Large, heavy catalogs from Sears, Service Merchandise, and similar companies.

.Checking movie showtimes in the newspaper and/or calling for the automated message about film times. And simply going to the cinema. Everything felt like a vibe.

.Independent radio. Numerous stations are controlled by the same corporation.

.The happiness of spotting your friend in a crowd. You’ve arranged to meet at a specific place at a specific time, often planning hours ahead, and there’s no way to let each other know if you’re running late. There are no location services available. All we had were our planning abilities, a public transport schedule, and hope. You reach the meeting point and instantly begin searching for them, but they aren’t there. You tell yourself they can’t be far away, yet you already feel uncomfortable standing alone by a statue. You don’t have a phone to keep you busy; you just stand there looking in the direction you expect them to come from…

.Pogs. I was too young to think much of anything was uncool, but pogs, I just didn’t understand. However, now I really appreciate the ’90s style and atmosphere shown in the artwork. I wish I had collected some.

.We had a phone number that you could dial for the current time and weather.

.Receiving a mix tape from a friend through the mail. I didn’t value it as much at the time, but I do now.

.I long for the days of using a phonebook and a grid-based map to figure out how to navigate areas of the city I wasn’t familiar with.

.Newspapers, particularly large ones filled with advertisements during the Christmas season. Even those from small towns. They all became smaller around the early 2000s, and then continued to get thinner over time. I truly miss them.

.“Reebok pumps.”

.“My dad. Seriously.”

.Lastly: “Family. The major family holidays mostly. The female leaders of the family passed away, and that marked the end of it. It was very frustrating to have to attend, but I would do anything for a day in the backyard at Grandma’s.”
