Outline:
When the weekend box office figures are released on Sunday mornings, they are considered approximations. After all, Sunday is part of the weekend, and although it’s true that purchasing tickets ahead of time is common among moviegoers nowadays, there are still people who make last-minute decisions or choose to buy their tickets in person. With this in mind, we will have to wait until tomorrow to find out which film led the domestic market over the past few days, as the current results are considered “too close to call.”
James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire And Ashhas remained in the top position since it first premiered in cinemas in mid-December, but Nia DaCosta’s 28 Years Later: The Temple of Bones debuted this past Friday, and it is challenging the crown. For now, they are in a virtual tie – although the Pandora-set blockbuster currently holds a slight advantage. Early Figures Still Show Avatar: Fire and Ash Leading the Domestic Box Office
We are now five weekends inAvatar: Fire And Ash‘s theatrical run, and everything continues to go smoothly for the blockbuster – and it will appear even more promising if it stays ahead of28 Years Later: The Temple of Boneswhen the smoke clears. The film’s predecessor, 2022’sAvatar: The Way of Water, managed to continue accumulating box office victories until the first weekend of February 2023 (when it came to M. Night Shyamalan’sKnock At The Cabin and Kyle Marvin’s 80 For Brady), and the groundbreaking title in the series remained at the top until February 2010. As far as legacy is concerned, it is certainly in the film’s interest to remain number one within the country.
In the broader context, it’s not really significant, as it’s just one aspect among many to consider in the impressive performance of the 2025 film. Early results fromThe Numberssay that it added an additional $13.3 million to its domestic total in the past three days, and it has earned $363.5 million in the market so far. This indicates that it has now exceeded James Gunn’sSupermanin revenue (the DC Studios film earned $354.2 million during its theatrical run), and the newest Cameron film is now among the top four for the year – trailing only Jared Hess’A Minecraft Movie ($424.1 million), Dean Fleischer-Camp’s Lilo & Stitch($423.8 million), Jared Bush and Byron Howard’sZootopia 2 ($390 million and rising).
Avatar: Fire And Ashis easily one of the top hits from the past year, although it should be mentioned that it still trails significantly behind the local revenue of the two preceding entries in the franchise. Respectively,Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Waterhad made $493.3 million and $564.6 million by the time each reached their 31st day of release, with the third film in the series significantly lagging behind this rate.

As I’ve mentioned in earlier weeks within this box office column, the positive aspect regarding these movies is that domestic revenue serves more as a finishing touch to the theatrical experience: the significant profits are generated internationally. Only 25-30 percent of global ticket sales have originated from the United States and Canada, and this trend remains consistent. The film is still progressing toward becoming only the eighth movie ever to surpass $2 billion in revenue.
At present, Avatar: Fire And AshIts total earnings have reached $1.318 billion, placing it as the 23rd highest-grossing movie ever (naturally, without considering inflation). It has now passed David Yates’Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2( $1.312 billion) and it is about to surpass Rian Johnson’sStar Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi ($1.322 billion).
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple Lacks a Box Office Weekend That Matches Its Critical Praise
It goes without saying that striving for the top position is not where28 Years Later: The Temple of Boneswants to continue after its theatrical release, but that’s where the situation remains, according to initial figures indicating the film is making $13 million this weekend, which is less than half a million short of whatAvatar: Fire And Ashreleased in the past three days. It marks the second highest opening weekend for a film in the horror franchise, though it’s somewhat disappointing.
You can understand why it’s disappointing when you consider how the film’s performance stacks up against what Danny Boyle’s produced.28 Years Laterlast summer. If the new sequel had managed to match the $30 million revenue of the 2025 film, it would have easily beaten the James Cameron science fiction blockbuster over the past three days, but it failed to create that level of enthusiasm. Some of the responsibility lies with the time of year (people tend to go to the movies less in January compared to June), but it’s still not the outcome that the directors and studio were likely expecting –especially considering that critics have given the horror sequel widespread acclaim (Live Streaming Movie Film Online’s Nick Venable provided a four-and-a-half star evaluation of28 Years Later: The Temple of Bones)
There is good news. PerDeadlineThe newly released production budget for the movie was $63 million, indicating that it still has a chance to become profitable at the global box office (its total worldwide revenue is currently $29.2 million). Additionally, the franchise received approval for the third movie last week, so the concept presented by Danny Boyle and Alex Garland will be finished and not abandoned due to these underwhelming outcomes.
